Ms Murray added: “I hope everyone takes a few minutes to find something active they enjoy doing and also find someone they can do it with.” Ms Murray, spokesperson for the Healthy Nation Index, said women in particular “struggle to find time to focus on their wellbeing.” More than half (55%) said lack of time due to work is a barrier, compared to 46% of men. Two-thirds of women indicated a lack of motivation compared to half of men.Īnd 35 percent of women reported they don’t know where to start when it comes to exercise, compared to 28 percent of men. Meanwhile, 47% said they didn’t do any vigorous exercise.Īs for men, 28% said that their physical health deteriorated over the same period, and 34% admitted that they did not engage in any active activity during this time. Results released today show that more than a third of women reported that their physical health had deteriorated in the previous 12 months. Tennis coach Judy Murray, mother of Wimbledon champion Sir Andy Murray, said the data showed there was a “really big challenge” ahead in terms of “energizing the nation”. The data comes from a survey of 8,000 adults conducted by the charity Nuffield Health.īritons are advised to get at least 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week, such as running or swimming, or two and a half hours of moderate activity, such as brisk walking or tennis. In men, this figure is lower: just over a third say that they did not train during this period. And not in vain.Īccording to the survey, almost half of the women had not engaged in active physical exercise in the past 12 months. Previously, many women resented large buttocks or thick thighs.īut curves have become fashionable in recent years, helped no doubt by the rise of Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. So where are the danger zones for fat accumulation? And what can you do to reduce the risk? University of Texas researchers who followed 2,399 people aged 70 to 79 for an average of 12 years found that intramuscular fat causes inflammation. The connection persisted even if the people were thin. It found that people with higher levels of visceral fat around the thighs, rather than cellulite-causing subcutaneous fat, had a one-third higher risk of developing heart failure. The study summarized the difference in risk earlier this month. Subcutaneous fat does not release these chemicals and serves as a layer between the skin and muscles. Subcutaneous fat, on the other hand, is a wobbly type of fat that sits just under the skin and causes cellulite to form. This is usually the cause of a beer belly and contributes to the undesirable apple shape, which is considered the physique with the highest risk of health problems. The most dangerous type of fat is known as visceral fat, a hard inner layer that forms between organs inside the abdomen. There is mounting evidence that not all fats are created equal, and what really matters is where you store that fat.
